Regenagri’s Carbon Insetting Standard: Rooted in regeneration

In our second article in Regenagri’s Carbon Insetting Standard series, we’ll explore how regenerative agriculture sits right at the heart of our programme.

Regenagri’s Carbon Insetting Programme is the first of its kind to be provided together with a third-party verified regenerative agriculture certification. The Insetting Standard generates farm-level carbon insetting units by assessing the outcomes of regenerative agriculture practices implemented through Regenagri Farm certification.

Regenagri-licensed brands, retailers, and organisations can acquire carbon insetting units generated by Regenagri-certified farms in their supply chain. This enables them to reduce their Scope 3 emissions while providing an additional income stream to the farmers they source from.

By embedding regenerative principles from the outset, Regenagri’s Insetting Standard is designed not only to deliver credible carbon outcomes, but to support wider benefits for soil health, biodiversity, water resources, and farm resilience.

How do regenerative practices drive Regenagri’s Insetting Standard?

Under the Regenagri Insetting Standards, regenerative on-farm practices are assessed and verified to generate insetting units. These include:

  • Cover cropping;
  • Reduced tillage;
  • Organic matter application;
  • Crop residue management;
  • Agroforestry; and
  • Renewable energy adoption.

Qualifying practices are not limited to this list, however. In fact, the Insetting Standard’s Innovative Regenerative Practice (IRP) framework rewards farms for their ambition and innovative interventions. The ‘Novelty’ criterion assesses additionality and how different a project is from common farming practices in the region, while the ‘Sustainability’ criterion rewards projects that deliver wider benefits for soil health, water, biodiversity and farm resilience.

How does the Insetting Standard capture wider positive environmental impacts?

The Insetting Standard also quantifies Ecosystem Service Impact alongside Carbon Insetting Units. This covers:

  • Soil health (organic matter, fertility, erosion);
  • Water (retention, quality, aquifer recharge, use efficiency);
  • Biodiversity (habitat, pollinators, species richness), and
  • Social outcomes (livelihoods,gender inclusivity, resilience).

The Standard also uses a Tiered Data Accuracy approach which applies different levels of verification to ensure reliable results. Annual audits and digital tools such as satellites, sensors, models, and field checks measure soil organic carbon, biomass, water, and biodiversity.
